South Saanich/Esquimalt Edition
Muffin madness: A neighbourhood in Bangkok, Thailand, is known for its Siamese-Portuguese culture. In the area called Kudeejeen, residents and visitors can enjoy a special treat that can be found in a small number of local bakeries. This is the khanom farang Kudeejeen, or the Kudeejeen “foreigner cake.” Made from eggs, wheat flour, and sugar, these muffins provide a satisfying crunch on the outside that gives way to a fluffy interior. Little pieces of dried fruit, such as raisins, adorn. The origins of this treat date back 250 years to the time when Portuguese settlers arrived in the area.
Dangerous road: A particular road in France is respected by the locals, who know how and when to safely travel on it. Called Passage du Gois, it connects the town of Beauvoir-sur-Mer on the eastern mainland to Île de Noirmoutier. The road is dangerous to use because it floods twice a day. If travellers are halfway across this approximately 4.5-kilometre (2.8-mile) road when the tidewater flows, they may face the danger of being submerged. Digital signs warn drivers about timing and conditions, and rescue towers are available in case people get caught in the middle.
Floating Forest: Homebush Bay in Sydney, Australia, has seen many retired ships pass through on their way to be disassembled. One, however, was saved from the wrecking ball. Called the SS Ayrfield, it still floats in this harbour today, and it is quite a sight. The rusted hull may not be pretty by itself, but the ship has been abandoned for so long that vegetation grows from it, and it has become known as the Floating Forest. Originally called the Corrimal, it was built in 1911 and was used as a transport ship. Visiting the ship is free, and it has become a popular tourist attraction for locals, visitors, and photographers.
Wandering moose: If you are a moose looking for a new home, why wouldn’t you trot up and down the streets of a town? That’s what a 400-kilogram (900-pound) male moose did in Centreville, Utah (U.S.). The young bull ventured into the town early one morning, just as everyone was waking up and heading out for a jog or to walk a dog. These big male moose can be dangerous creatures if frightened, so someone called the police and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. The police and biologists were able to tranquillize the visitor and transport him safely back to the wilderness.

Guava king: An Indian man is being honoured for his contribution to the environment after years of working hard to develop an orchard on barren land. Satyendra Guatam Manjhi lives in Imaliyachak, a small village in the Indian state of Bihar. Accomplishing this was difficult. He began by hauling water to the land to nourish the plants, but wild animals kept destroying them. So he planted a ring of thorny bushes around the area to deter the animals. This tactic worked, and 15 years later he has an orchard of about 10,000 guava trees, as a result of his labour. Now, along with enriching the environment, he is able to make a living by selling the fruit.
Big winner: When Chad Breyer of Tavistock, Ontario (Canada), buys a lottery ticket, his habit is to stick it in his vehicle’s cup holder. Why not? The chances are rare that he would win any big lottery prize. However, one of his recent lottery ticket purchases was a winner. The ticket sat, as usual, in the cupholder for days before Chad’s wife, Christa, asked to take a look at it. If they’d known that the ticket was worth $50 million (CDN) in prize winnings, the couple most certainly would have put it in a safe place immediately and not left it in their unlocked vehicle! But all’s well that ends well. The pair plans to buy a new home for their young family.
Colourful Dane: Great Danes usually aren’t multi-coloured, but one named Echo loves to show off his many metallic hues that include green, blue, pink, and purple. Of course, Echo is not brilliantly adorned in his natural state. His master, Sierra Schoon of Grand Junction, Colorado (U.S.), dyes him. She uses pet-safe, vegetable-based dye, and she has been doing it since Echo was a pup. The dog, a psychiatric service animal, loves the attention, and sits quietly and happily as the job gets done. When he’s out in the world, Echo also attracts the attention of many passersby. Schoon believes this has helped her pet become less shy.
Moldy bun? Who would eat a bun that looks moldy? Probably not very many people, unless they know the bun simply looks moldy, but really isn’t, and actually tastes good. That is the case with buns sold by a Chinese company called Nanjing Yican Foods. The buns are called matchsticks, and are a kind of puff pastry filled with cheese that has a green hue. When a bun is squeezed, the cheese oozes out, making the pastry seem even more unappetizing. However, those who have tried the buns give them rave reviews, with hundreds of taste testers saying they are quite a delicacy. So be careful not to judge a book by its cover, or in this case, a bun by its appearance.

Hard to eat: Sushi can be a colourful and mouth-watering menu item, but anyone who comes across sushi made by a Japanese man named Hama had better watch out. His sushi is made out of stone! Hama got his training at the Joshibi University of Art and Design in Kanagawa, Japan, and his art has attracted quite a bit of interest. The path he took to making these pieces was accidental. He noticed that a piece of red granite resembled a chunk of tuna. After that, he started searching for stones that he could combine in artful ways to appear like various bites of sushi. He uses fine tools and buffing material to create the pieces.
Swan song: When Recep Mirzan rescued an injured swan in a field back in 1984, the Turkish man had no idea he’d made a lifelong friend. Mirzan did not want to leave the swan to fend for herself, so he took her home, deciding he would tend to the swan’s broken wing. Almost 40 years later, the female bird, which he named Garip, is still living on Mirzan’s farm in the Karaagac region of the country. She has her own coop for her nightly sleep, and during the day she follows her rescuer around as he does his chores. Garip has lived a very long time for a swan, probably because she is living in a protected environment rather than in the wild.
Sleeping beauty? People stream lots of things on the internet these days, such as movies, biographies, games, education sessions, and meetings, to name only a few. But streaming yourself sleeping? Seems a little odd to imagine that anyone would be interested. But Wang Yiming, a former member of a Taiwanese Chinese-Malaysian pop group, did just that, and she got a lot of hits. She often streams herself playing video games and participating in online chats, and she has a following. So her fans may not have found it unusual to tune in and see her sleeping. Perhaps they thought she’d wake up and talk to them. Her prank ended up attracting thousands of viewers and generating $3,000 USD in donations.
Dog’s life: A German countess named Karlotta Leibenstein once had a pet German Shepherd named Gunther III. When the countess passed away in 1991, she left her vast wealth to her beloved pet. Fast forward a few decades, and one of Gunther III’s descendants is now the recipient of the deceased countess’s growing portfolio. The canine Gunther is CEO of the Gunther Corporation, whose (human) staff manage the fortune, which is worth over $1 million (USD) today! Gunther lives in a mansion in Miami, Florida (U.S.), and is well cared for by a maid and butler. It’s a dog’s life for this canine! See Gunther VI...

Heart-shaped lakes: In an oasis called Al Qudra, near the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is a manmade attraction called Love Lake. As seen from the air, Love Lake beckons visitors to its two heart-shaped lakes that intertwine. Desert surrounds the lake on all sides. However, within the Love Lake park area, visitors find lush vegetation, including trees and flowers. Not far from the bustling city, couples and families can enjoy a day trip for a barbecue, a cycle, and a beautiful sunset. Almost everything in the park is shaped like a heart, including signposts, a badminton court, and flowerbeds.
Food art: While many artists use paint to create their works of art, a talented young woman from Egypt uses edible ingredients for her drawings and illustrations. Sally Magdy Murad expresses her creative spirit using such materials as honey, chocolate, jam, juice, and syrup. Her tools are also unique and include spoons and toothpicks. As she has practiced her art, she has added other mediums, such as raisins, salt, and candy. The experienced artist started with this “food-paint” in simple works, but eventually her drawings became more sophisticated and now include Arab personalities. Murad’s art is especially interesting because it can be eaten after it’s created.
Pizza problem: When ordering a restaurant meal from a delivery service, customers expect their food to be handled with care. That’s what a man from Detroit, Michigan (U.S.), believed, until his doorbell camera revealed something different. He and his wife ordered a pizza one day, but didn’t end up eating it. That’s because they saw, on their doorbell camera, the pizza falling out of the box on their front porch. The delivery driver picked it up, brushed it off, and left it on the doorstep. The couple complained and got a refund, and the driver was fired. But they didn’t blame the delivery service for the problem, realizing it wasn’t their fault.
Doll delirium: Shirley Sumaiser of Toronto, Ontario (Canada), has a dollhouse that doesn’t have windows, doors, and rooms in which children can play with their dolls. Called “The Doll House,” her home is on a quiet street not far from downtown. Her yard, fence, porch, and eaves are full of dolls of every variety, and more! The woman collects not just dolls, but stuffed and plastic toys of all kinds. People taking a stroll along her street will find everything from troll dolls to Santa Clauses to Disney characters packed on the lawn. Sumaiser gets much joy from decorating the front yard of her two-story house, and she changes the decorations with every season.

Masked bandit: A home in North Ridgeville, Ohio (U.S.), was the site of a masked robbery. The robber was not human, and it didn’t steal anything. However, it did make quite a mess. The villain was a raccoon, which had somehow found its way into the home. The owner realized something was amiss after finding the mess, and then discovering the source of the problem. A raccoon was taking a nap in the dishwasher. Police were summoned, and patrolman John Metzo answered the call. Metzo managed to get the animal out of the dishwasher without hurting it, then encouraged the animal to leave the premises. No charges were filed.
Iron shoes: There are various ways to exercise to stay strong and healthy, but a Chinese man decided to take his workout one step further, literally. Zhang Enshun, who hails from Yulin City in Guangxi province, puts on a pair of “iron shoes” and tries to walk. The iron shoes are actually steel plates that he straps to his shoes. He started with one plate and has progressed to four, which together weigh a total of 150 kilograms (330 pounds). He tries to gradually increase the distance he is able to walk in these shoes, and he practices tai chi while doing it. Exercise experts don’t advise trying this type of workout without first receiving training from specialists.
Garden community: An intriguing landscape design exists in Nærum, Denmark, in the northern outskirts of Copenhagen. Known as the “round gardens,” they are actually oval-shaped allotment gardens, laid out between public housing and traditional housing. This creation was designed in 1948 by renowned landscape architect Søren Carl Theodor Marius Sørensen. Still in use today, the gardens consist of 40 hedge-encircled plots of land measuring approximately 25x15 metres (82x49 feet), within which an owner can build a cottage and design their own garden plots. The plots do not have driveways leading to them, meaning that inhabitants are encouraged to walk to their cars, which helps them get to know their neighbours in the process.

Underground garden: People living in London, England, during World War II were well aware of the city’s need for underground bunkers where people could escape air raids. Today, one of these bunkers has found a new purpose. It has become a subterranean farm known as Growing Underground. Located 33 metres (108 feet) under Clapham High Street in the southwest part of London, the concept was the brainchild of co-founder Richard Ballard. The underground garden has no natural light, of course, so LED lights provide nourishment for the hydroponically grown plants, which include radishes, pea shoots, fennel, coriander, and more.
Hiding place: A car thief from the province of Alberta, Canada, didn’t cover up his tracks very well, and that led to his capture. Police received word that a Jeep had been stolen from the town of Olds, about 89 kilometres (55 miles) north of Calgary. Someone also reported a vehicle in a ditch on a nearby rural road, which turned out to be the Jeep. Upon taking a closer look, police found a pretty clear clue about where the thief had gone: footprints in the snow. The officers followed by foot, and soon discovered, under a pile of hay in a barn, a young man whom they charged with the offense.
The black violin: Violinists all over the world appreciate the sound of a Stradivarius violin, made by Antonio Stradivari in the 17th and 18th centuries. A replica of one of these instruments, made in 1992 and named Blackbird (after the common bird), was created by Swedish sculptor Lars Widenfalk. The artist made the creation out of a piece of diabase, a dark-coloured, igneous rock. While using his chiseling tools, he had noticed the lovely sound the stone made, and decided to try making an instrument. Widenfalk used black ebony for a few pieces, such as the fingerboard and chin rest. Many musicians have played Blackbird over the years.
Keeping time: Budapest, Hungary, is home to a unique installment called the Timewheel, which was unveiled in 2004 to honour the country’s entrance into the European Union. The Timewheel is an enormous hourglass in which small pieces of glass, rather than sand, trickle from the top v-shaped reservoir to the bottom one. A computerized system assists with the release of the glass, which takes an entire year to drop from top to bottom. Every year on December 31, the Timewheel must be manually rotated 180 degrees, with the help of a four-person team using steel cables. Then the glass begins keeping time for the next year.

Big cell phone: When his newly purchased cell phone arrived on the doorstep in a large, unwieldy box, a young Thai man might have figured that something wasn’t quite right. The fellow had ordered the phone online because the price was so low. Unfortunately, he didn’t read the small print before adding it to his online cart and paying for it. What arrived at his house was definitely not the mobile phone he’d been waiting for. Instead, the box contained a coffee table. But the coffee table was shaped like a cell phone, complete with an on-off button and rose gold edging. The lesson here is to carefully check the details before buying!

Big bug: A woman from Brisbane, Australia, got the shock of her life while on an outing in the surrounding area with her husband and grandson. Pam Taylor discovered the biggest moth she had ever seen on a tree branch. In fact, it was larger than her outstretched hand. She took a photo of the insect beside her hand and posted it on social media. Members of the Facebook group called Amateur Entomology Australia identified the moth as a giant wood moth scientifically known as Endoxyla cinereus. Viewers of the post were amazed at the sight of the beautiful insect, which is common in the eastern coastal areas of Australia, although the specimen found by Taylor was larger than most.
River house: The Loire River meanders its way through France and empties into the Bay of Biscay on the country’s Atlantic Ocean coastline. In the middle of this waterway near the town of Lavau-sur-Loire, a building is tilted and appears to have been caught in a flood. In reality, the structure is a large-scale work of art created by Jean-Luc Courcoult for the Estuaire Art Exhibition in 2007. Known as La maison dans la Loire (The House in the Loire), this building catches the attention of riverbank strollers. The building is secured to the riverbed so it won’t float away. At night, a light comes on in one of the windows, eerily glowing over the waterscape.
Timeline: Two islands in the Bering Sea belong to different countries: Big Diomede and Little Diomede. The former belongs to Russia and the latter to the United States. Although less than five kilometres (3.1 miles) apart, the time on Big Diomede Island is almost a full day ahead of that on Little Diomede Island. So, when it’s noon on a Thursday in Little Diomede, it’s 9 a.m. on Friday on Big Diomede. That’s because the International Date Line runs right between the two islands. So, if someone stands on Little Diomede (“Yesterday Island”) and looks west, toward Big Diomede (“Tomorrow Island”), they are looking into the future, and vice versa.

Wolf dog: Rottweilers may have a reputation for being fierce dogs, but they are not wolves. But some zookeepers in central China hoped that visitors wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. At the Xiangwushan Zoo in Xianning, Hubei province, the wolf enclosure was home to one of these domestic canines. An outraged visitor posted a photo of the Rottweiler on social media, and the zoo representatives had to explain the situation. They said the Rottweiler was actually a guard dog, and the wolf that was previously kept in the enclosure had passed away from old age. The zoo was ordered to remove the wolf enclosure sign so visitors wouldn’t be confused.
Demanding man: A middle-aged man with a law degree from England’s Oxford University seemed to think that his elderly parents owed him a living, and a good one at that. Faiz Siddiqui enjoyed a rent-free life in an expensive Hyde Park flat in London for 20 years, paid for by his parents, who also provided him with a generous weekly allowance. The older folks grew tired of it and wanted to cut off their support for their son. But the son didn’t want to let go of his lavish lifestyle, so he sued his Dubai-based parents. With an attitude like that, no wonder he hadn’t worked for a decade. His parents’ lawyers were fighting the claim in the Court of Appeal.
Flower power: An artist from Melbourne, Australia, works with a unique medium to produce realistic results. Michelle Nguyen is a sugar flower artist who makes amazingly true-to-life flowers from edible ingredients. She crafts all types of flowers, from peonies to poppies and roses to tulips, not overlooking any detail. The flowers she creates look like they have just been picked from the garden. She uses fondant and food colouring, so they are safe to eat, but who would want to devour these beautiful blossoms? Nguyen has won awards for her work, and she offers workshops to teach others about her techniques.
Antarctic treasure: More than half a century after losing his wallet in Antarctica, of all places, an American man got it back. Paul Grisham of San Diego, California, spent 13 months during the 1960s working on the southern continent as a Navy meteorologist. He realized at the time that he’d lost the billfold, but then completely forgot about it in later years. Someone found it behind a locker in 2014, and the search for Grisham began. Finally, amateur sleuths located him through social media, emails, and snail mail. Getting the wallet back thrilled the nonagenarian and his family. Inside were relics of his past, including his driver’s licence and his Navy ID.

Living on water: The Netherlands is known for an engineering ability that makes flood-prone areas livable. Waterbuurt-West is one of those creative ideas. Meaning “water quarter,” Waterbuurt is a subdivision of floating homes on Lake Eimer in Amsterdam’s IJburg development zone. There are more than 50 of these dwellings, which are actual homes, not houseboats. They won’t float away because they are anchored to steel mooring poles; they only move up and down, not sideways, when the tide changes. The material used is light steel and wood, and they have basic but attractive living areas, kitchens, and outdoor patios.
Close call: A man from Sparta, Tennessee (U.S.), almost missed a $1 million lottery prize. That’s because he dropped his ticket while running errands. Nick Slatten had discovered that his ticket was the winner, then he and his financée briefly celebrated before he continued with his day. Among his stops was an auto parts store. When he returned home, the ticket was gone. In a frantic search, he revisited every place he’d gone that day. Finally, his luck returned and he found the ticket on the ground in the parking lot of the auto shop. If it had been picked up by anyone else, the finder could have claimed it as their own and won the money.
Flying home: Own a small plane? Want to park it in your driveway? People in the U.S. in this situation could buy a home in one of several hundred airparks. These are subdivisions with a shared runway and wide streets, allowing plane owners to land close to home, then taxi their craft right to their driveway. Some homes may even have hangars instead of garages! Of course, people who live in these fly-in communities must be fairly wealthy, as the property and amenities are quite expensive. However, those who can afford it can hop into their plane and quickly and easily go wherever they’d like, instead of having to fight traffic on the way to a destination.
Fake plate: Why would someone want to make a fake licence plate for a vehicle? Perhaps they lost their actual plates, or maybe they can’t afford the insurance. Whatever the case, a man from Brantford, Ontario (Canada), must have had a reason for taking the chance of using fake plates. This man used a diaper box as his raw material. He cut a piece of cardboard to the dimensions of an Ontario licence plate, then he printed out what looked like the markings of a plate, complete with a licence number. Unfortunately for him, he was pulled over by police and taken to task for the forgery.

Feathery feat: Artists use many different mediums to craft their work, but pigeon feathers are not often the choice of material. That’s what Kate MccGwire of London, England, used to create an art installation called “Discharge.” With about 10,000 gray and white feathers, which she considers to be overlooked material, she made what appears to be a huge outflow of liquid emerging from the top of a library bookcase. Where the “flow” hits the floor, more pigeon feathers form what looks like a churning pool. The piece stands five metres high (16.4 feet) and is part of a larger exhibition.

These small pods are about the size of a phone booth (remember them?), and they are becoming more and more available. Leaning towers: Most people have heard of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, but the leaning towers of Santos may not be quite as well known. Santos is a city located on shore of the Atlantic Ocean, southwest of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Many of the hundreds of buildings in its skyline lean to one side. Some lean a tiny bit, not visible to the naked eye, but others are noticeably tilted by as much as a few feet. The buildings lean because building codes were more lax when these towers were constructed, compared to today, and foundations were not as deep. But visitors to the Wanfeng Lake Castle (also called Jilong Castle Country Club), on Wanfeng Lake in Guizhou province, can enjoy a bit of European atmosphere. This castle-like, luxury hotel, which was built in 2011, is complete with a bridge connecting the island resort to the mainland. Wenfeng Lake is surrounded by jungle and foliage-covered peaks. The resort boasts a spa and entertainment club, as well as conference and dining rooms. Guest rooms offer views of the beautiful lake. This castle hotel is reminiscent of the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, near Füssen, Bavaria, Germany.

Wooden rug: A Spanish artist found a way to use her talent, express her feelings about her difficult upbringing, and provide an interesting and intricate piece to amaze viewers. Selva Aparicio used a wooden floor as her medium. Her finished piece is a rug that she carved into the wood. She calls it “Childhood Memories,” and it contains designs that reveal her journey growing up in a chaotic household. The rug carving is elaborate and is complete with fringe on the ends and an overall design that appears to be that of an actual traditional Persian carpet, until the viewer takes a closer look. Doing nothing: People don’t often have jobs doing nothing, but that’s exactly what Shoji Morimoto of Japan does, and he gets paid for it. Morimoto himself came up with the idea for the dream job by advertising his services. He offered to make himself available to anyone who wanted company. Since posting his ad in 2018, the married father has been hired about 3,000 times to simply sit and listen to people talk. Or he might stand in a line for someone, accompany the person on a walk, or pose for a photo. Basically, he eases people’s loneliness without having to be a friend or even an acquaintance.

Staying fresh: Imagine buying grapes at the grocery store and being able to keep them fresh for several months. Farmers in Afghanistan employ an age-old method to do just that. It’s called gangina, a technique that involves using two layers of wet soil as a container for the fruit. The soil, which is formed into the shape of a saucer, is dried in the sun, and the grapes are sealed inside. The airtight saucer is then stored in a cool place, sometimes even underground. The fresh grapes placed inside the container must not be spoiled, squashed, or broken, or the rest of the healthy grapes will spoil as well.
Tiny fruit: Coconuts, those large balls with the brown shells and the white milk and meat hidden inside, bring thoughts of warm climes and interesting cuisine. But big, familiar coconuts aren’t the only variety available. A relative of the coconut is the coquito. This marble-sized fruit is also called pigmy coconut or dwarf coconut, and grows on Jubaea chilensis palm trees that are common in Chile. Unlike the fruit, these trees are huge and can live for many decades. The tiny fruit looks and tastes like its bigger counterpart, but doesn’t have milk inside the shell. Wild chickens: There are feral cats and there are feral dogs, but feral chickens? On the Hawaiian island of Kauai (U.S.), these wild birds do, indeed, exist. They can be found everywhere, from the beach to the street to parking lots, which is an odd sight for visitors who are accustomed to seeing chickens in chicken coops. According to the locals, these free-roaming chickens and roosters came into existence after two hurricanes in the 1980s and 1990s wrecked the coops. The homeless domestic birds then mated with other wild fowl already on the island, leading to a poultry population boom.
Water tower home: Lots of people make homes out of abandoned buildings, such as old churches or schoolhouses. But a pair of cousins from Nieuw-Lekkerland, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands, made a unique transformation. They turned an unused water tower into a home. The cousins are Sven and Lennart de Jong, who lived near the tower as children. When the tower came on the real estate market, they bought it, then spent 10 years making it into beautiful living quarters with their own hands. In the middle of the renovation, they both met and married their spouses, both of whom loved the idea. Now, the two couples and their children each have their own living spaces in their distinctive home.
